Calico Cat News From Jesse Willms

Hi. This is Jesse again. I just learned today that it is impossible to clone a calico cat.

Who knew? You can clone any other type of cat but not our beloved calicos!

So unfair.

Jesse Willms – Calico Cat Fancier

Jesse Willms has long been known as one cool cat. Whether he’s hiking the Amazon or exploring the French wine country, Jesse always looks cool. In fact, one of my favorite memories of Jesse Willms is seeing him at a hotel bar in Rio de Janeiro with a bottle of Dom Perignon in one hand and two beautiful blond girls on his arm.

But many people don’t know about the softer side of Jesse Willms – his deep and unfading love of calico cats.

You’d think I’d be a dog person,” Willms said. “But the truth is, there is nothing that relaxes me more at the end of the day then sitting down and petting my little pussycat, Nico.”

Jesse has always had at least one calico cat since he first moved out of his family’s home and started living on his own. He’s tried to adopt Persians and tabbies from time to time, but was never really able to bond with them the way he does with his calicos.

People don’t realize how different calicos are than normal cats,” Willms said. “They are actually a genetic aberration. They have too many chromosomes, which makes them unique in the house cat world.”

It’s because of these extra chromosomes, Jesse noted, that almost all calico cats are female.

When it comes to calicos,” Willms said, “only one in 100,000 is a male. I’ve never been lucky enough to own a male calico but if I ever get the chance, I’d love to see how they behave. It’s a shame that almost all male calicos are infertile, so I’d never be able to breed a male calico with Nico. But, a man can dream.”

Jesse said one thing most people don’t realize about calico cats is that almost all of them are vaguely retarded.

The reason they are so much friendlier than other cats is that they are generally confused by the world around them,” Willms said. “For that reason they seek comfort in their owners. This means they end up being much, much more affectionate than other breeds of cats.”

This is also why Jesse said he’d never own a Persian cat again.

The Persians know they have you at their mercy,” Willms said. “They are evil. They will pee on your couch right in front of you and not feel bad about it – because they know you will eventually feed them anyway.”

Calicos, on the other hand, do everything they can to please their owners, because they know that deep down inside they need the love, protection and security that their owners provide, Jesse said.

Which is not to say, Jesse said, that calicos – or any other type of cat – are dumb animals.

There was a scientific study recently that claimed to show that dogs are smarter than cats,” Willms said. “They attached bits of food to some strings and no food to other strings and the dogs were able to figure out which pieces of strings had the food and which didn’t. The cats in the same study went to sleep and ignored the string. This made them think that dogs were smarter than cats.”

But, Jesse continued, “This really didn’t prove anything. What I think it showed was that the cats knew they’d be fed eventually and therefore didn’t see any point in chasing around pieces of string that may or may not have food on them. If anything, it may have proven that the cats were smarter than the scientists doing the tests.”

Willms suggests that anyone who is thinking about a cat consider a calico – and that they pick them up from an animal shelter.

Because their coloring – a mix of white, black and orange – is so odd, many people don’t adopt them,” Willms said. “So they spend their lives living in cages while people take home the black or white cats. But, honestly the calicos would make much better pets. People just need to educate themselves about it.”

Over the course of this blog, Jesse Willms and I plan to spend a good deal of time educating people about the joys of calico cats so that people can learn what a joy they are to own.
